Keeping Tells to Yourself

26 July 2010

Keeping Tells to Yourself By B. Butler Tells appear in online poker players often without them having any idea. This is why a tell is valuable: because it relays information the broadcaster has no idea he is giving out, and therein allows access to some window to his playing, costing him money bringing you his online poker chips. The tell is only valuable when it remains hidden, a premonition or an idea: if the broadcaster knows he is broadcasting, the reliability of the tell is destroyed. One should never, then, let another know what they are doing wrong. It can be fun when playing against friends or even close enemies to mock them or make a big deal out of what they are doing that makes it so obvious how they are playing. This is good for a joke, but is particularly a bad move in the long run, as you are closing off the door you just opened. Information you gather should be kept to yourself. Even if its not a tell but something subtle about a online poker players patterns, this isn’t something you should give even your other friends at the table, sharing secrets. This information belongs to you, and should be a commodity you keep and work off of the same way you would your cards or your cash.
